Questions, answered

Is L'ÉTAPE free?

Yes. The map, the road surface and gradient layers, the stages and GPX analysis are free, with no account needed to explore. Pro is a paid plan for aerial photos, LiDAR HD relief and drawing your own routes.

How do you grade a road?

Each road is scored three ways for your bike: is it practicable (access, surface, smoothness, technicality, barriers, gradient, where it runs), is it safe among traffic (speed, volume, lanes, separation, stops, crossings, calming, parked cars), and is it a pleasure (signed routes, cols, water, woods, viewpoints). The three multiply, then each road is ranked against the others in its département: the best 20% of its length is grade 3.

Which maps does it use?

IGN's Plan IGN for France, IGN's aerial photos (Photographies aériennes, 20 cm) and IGN's LiDAR HD relief, served through our own map servers.

Does it work outside France?

Plan IGN, the aerial photos and LiDAR HD cover France. Beyond, the map shows a simpler world base map.

Is there an app to install?

No install needed today: L'ÉTAPE runs in your browser, on your phone as on your computer. Companion apps for iPhone and Android are in development, for offline maps and for sending your rides to Apple Health or Health Connect.

Can I cancel Pro anytime?

Yes. Payment and cancellation go through Stripe's secure billing page, in a few clicks.
